This basic research programme, addressing molecular mechanisms of viral disease in Atlantic salmon, will draw on expertise from fish biology and successful salmon research programmes including the ISA disease and the salmon genome, to investigate viral disease in marine species. The programme aims to use ISAV infection in Atlantic salmon as a model to investigate the pathobiology of viral disease in fish. The planned research activities include: 1) molecular characterisation of determinants of ISAV pathogenicity, 2) functional studies of important immune genes involved in the response to disease, 3) investigation of salmon tissue responses to disease and correlation with viral gene expression and replication during tissue pathogenesis, and 4) cellular receptor recognition of ISAV with emphasis on carbohydrate specificity and tissue distribution. Activities will involve the adaptation of new molecular techniques to the study of viral disease in fish.
