Awareness about the origin of our food and how it is made, or how sustainable it is, is increasing among consumers. The trend is particularly strong for seafood, and that forms the background for this project. The overall idea of the project is to develop a laboratory test-based certification scheme for feed products for the aquaculture industry. The goal is that the methodology will make it possible to identify and quantify which species different feed ingredients and feed products consist of, with high accuracy. The background for the idea is the ever-increasing focus among consumers and authorities on the utilization of sustainable sources in the aquaculture industry. Because existing laboratory analysis methods are not sufficiently accurate, current traceability solutions are largely based on paper documentation issued by various local authorities. Experience has shown that such systems represent great opportunities for fraud. According to Europol, such tampering with food labeling, known as food fraud, is the second largest black economy in Europe, only surpassed by drug trafficking. ORIVO AS has previously developed a methodology based on a laboratory analysis that replaces the need for paper documentation for omega-3 products. This is currently being offered to brand owners as a certification scheme. Now the company wants to do the same for producers of feed for the aquaculture industry. The key R&D challenges in the project are related to developing a method that is accurate enough to be able to quantify the species composition in complex feed products. The chosen approach is based on combining next generation sequencing (NGS) of genetic material from relevant species with advanced bioinformatics methods. The technology is developed in close collaboration with both internationally leading research environments such as Cornell University, NMBU, SINTEF and UiO and important industry players such as BioMar A/S, Haploid AS and Patogen AS.
