Interview and questionnaire surveys were conducted of salmon slaughterhouses, smoking and filleting companies, to map the industry's own perception of challenges related to stunning and product defects. The results from the survey showed that the slaughterhouses, with few exceptions, do not have major challenges with quality. They also showed that problems with back fractures and blood stains associated with anesthesia have been reduced. Of a total of 50 slaughterhouses, 39 answered the survey and at the end of September 2012, only 2 slaughterhouses had not phased out CO2. The challenge related to quality in connection with slaughter is small, but the variation in the answers was large and this indicates that some slaughterhouses had major problems. Goals: • To obtain reliable anonymised statistics on the use of anesthesia in Norwegian salmon slaughterhouses in terms of methods and frequency of injuries. • To use this knowledge to avoid injuries due to anesthesia.
