"Stranda Prolog develops and supply slaughtering lines to the aquaculture industry. An important part of the production line is the HeliX chilling tank, where fish bleeds out, are chilled and stored. The tank consists of a long cylindrical tank and a screw, which transports the fish to outlet. The tank operates with counter flow; the water inlet is at the fish outlet, which means that the cleanest and coldest water meets the fish just before it is taken out. Today, the tanks are operated based on experience and several variables can be changed to adjust the operation to the product. The larger tanks have functions for air bubbling, which can increase the circulation in the tanks and thereby the heat transfer from the fish. The results show large variations in chilling-efficiency, which amongst others varies both with regards to bobbling frequency and flow rate of RSW. The first test of a new control system for bubbling frequency was very encouraging. The system uses the time the fish has been inside the tank as a control factor amongst others. Recorded variation indicates a potential of up to 40 % increased cooling efficiency. New solutions will increasingly focus towards product quality and yield. The goal is an easy control and operation to allow for optimal quality of the raw materials used. For instance, all fish of equal size will have a known and controllable temperature out of the HeliX spin-chillers."
