Greenland halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides) is a deep water fish captured in the Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea. In this extensive baseline study fish were sampled at 27 stations in the whole fishing area with a total of 1288 fish samples. All fish were analysed for heavy metals with emphasis on mercury, cadmium, lead and arsenic. Further PCB, dioxins and dioxinlike PCBs and brominated flame retardants were analysed. Results showed that 99 samples out of 1288 had mercury concentrations higher than 0.5 mg/kg ww (EU maximum level),and 262 samples out of 1028 samples had concentrations of sum dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs higher than 8 ng (1998)TEQ/kg ww (EU maximum level at that time). These results showed that this particular species were susceptible for exceeding EU limits for dioxins and PCBs and measures were taken to minimize the risk for such fish to reach the market. (1) Document the levels of undesirable substances in Greenland halibut, an important fish species used for human consumption; (2) Provide comprehensive and reliable data needed for the authorities as a basis for decision-making regarding seafood safety; (3) Provide a basis for subsequent risk-based monitoring of undesirable substances in Greenland halibut.
