North Sea Herring (Clupea harengus) is a large stock of the same fish species as Norwegian Spring Spawning Herring but are geographically placed further south in the North Sea. In this baseline study of this stock 1000, fish from 40 stations was captured by Institute of Marine Research, Wessel in the whole fishing area. They were measure for heavy metals (Hg, Cd, Pb and As) and also for PCBs, dioxins and dioxinlike PCBs and brominated flame retardants. For metals the values were low and not exceeding the EU limits. The same was the cast for POPs in the main North Sea area. Some fish captured close to the county of Telemark, with a known history of dioxin emissions showed however values exceeded EU limits for dioxins plus dioxinlike PCBs. This warrants further monitoring. (1) Provide baseline data on major contaminants in North Sea Herring throughout its distribution area and covering all seasons; (2) Explore the relationship between contaminants and weight, age, lipid content, gender and gonad maturation.
