Mackerel (Scomber scombrus) was sampled for this baseline study from 2007 to 2009 in the central fishing area for the species in the North Sea, Skagerrak, Norwegian Sea and also West of Scotland. Sampling was undertaken by the Institute of Marine Research, Bergen. About 800 fillet samples were analysed for POPs and 800 for metals. Even though mackerel has a very high fillet lipid content the level of POPs in terms of sum of dioxins and dioxinlike PCBs was around 1 and well below the upper limit of 8 ng (1998) TEQ/kg ww. The results for metals were also low except far o few cadmium values above the 0,05 limit for Cd in fish muscle. The results are used for planning a monitoring system for the species.
