Summary The four purse seine companies Ervik & Sævik, Eros, Kings Bay and Herøyhav have joined forces with SINTEF Ocean to develop a tool that can make it easier to choose between different operating modes; direct operation through main engine, diesel electric via main engine, or diesel electric through auxiliary engines. An on-board tool has been developed which shows whether the vessel has at all times chosen the correct operating mode. This can most easily be explained with the help of an example: a screen shows how energy efficient the vessel has been operated in the last 8 hours. The red curve actually shows consumption, while the green one shows what the system thinks is the best one can achieve. If the curves are on top of each other, it runs optimally. If there is a distance between the curves then it should be switched to another operating mode. Several such screens have been developed that provide relevant information to the skipper to drive energy-efficiently. Based on the first version of the system, users have also come up with many good suggestions and ideas. Some of these will be implemented in the upcoming version, some are in the process of being implemented, and others will have to be taken further in other projects. In other projects, it has already been decided that the results will be built on, and two external actors have expressed their interest in commercializing the results.
