The selective and energy efficient longline fishery may produce significant bycatch of diving seabirds. In Particular bycatch of seabirds in the newly developed Antarctic toothfish fisheries is a threat to albatross populations. The identification of "real" bycatch-rates is only possible through scientific observers on board commercial fishing vessels. The Institute of Sea Fisheries (SF) collaborates in the implementation of such observer programs and analyses data for international conservation conventions in order to implement political conservation measures (CCAMLR = Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources).
