The institute participates in the annual international sea going surveys to identify population parameters of the pelagic fish species herring, mackerel, horse mackerel, sprat, and blue whiting in North Sea and Northern Atlantic. These data are combined with catch records and landing statistics from the commercial fleet and provide input for the fish stock assessments of the international ICES working groups. The results of these calculations serve as a basis for political decisions in the framework of the Common European Fisheries Policy and in international agreements. Objective: Aim of this project is to provide real-time information on the development of commercially exploited fish populations to enable wise management practice for sustainable use of the resources. Participation in working groups in connection with this task: ICES Study Group on Target Strength Estimation in the Baltic Sea (SGTSEB), WGBIFS.
