The western Baltic Sea is part of the transitional area between the high saline North Sea and the brackish Baltic Proper. The ecosystem is characterized by strong natural variations of the hydrographic conditions. As a consequence, the composition of the fish community and the population sizes vary to a high degree. The natural variability is superimposed by manifold and increasing anthropogenic influences. To identify and distinct these impacts from natural variability is a challenge for the marine science. The aim of the investigations is the monitoring of long-term changes in fish communities caused by climate change, fishery and other anthropogenic activities (wind farms, mining). Among other applications, these investigations are used as a basis for controlling the sustainability of existing and planned economic use of the German territorial sea and EEZ. Research cruises: annually 1 cruise FRV "Solea" and 1 cruise FRC "Clupea" (Oderbank).
