The German fishery only supplies 15 percent of the German food fish consumption. However, for some marine fish stocks the German allocated shares mark substantial and as the case may be dominate fisheries activities. As EU member Germany is obliged to submit national data for the scientific fish stock assessment working groups of ICES and other regional fisheries organisations for the advice for the sustainable management of fish stocks. Basic data for assessments are representative samples of landings and discards in German fisheries. Discard and bycatch estimations are only possible on board of commercial fishing vessels and allow to judge the impact on the marine ecosystem and the long term effect on marine living resources as basis for the provision of future generations with fish.
