Sustainable fisheries management largely depends on reliable information about the affiliation of the investigated stocks. The Norwegian cod stocks constitute a valuable living resource that is being harvested by Norway, Russia and the EU (incl. Germany). The current separation of coastal and Northeast Arctic cod is based on the internal growth zones of the ear stones (otoliths). This subjective method is to be quantitatively examined in the project by means of digital image analysis for the first time. The resulting stock separation will be compared with the outcome of other methods (morphometrics, genetics etc.). The project is divided into a test and application phase. The exchange of young scientists of the two leading fisheries research institutions in Norway (NFR - The Research Council of Norway) and Germany contributes to a significant expansion of the knowledge and skills of the participants and a strengthening of the Norwegian-German cooperation, which forms a fruitful basis for further joint projects. The experiences and methods in both institutions complement each other in an ideal way. Exchange of knowledge.
