Summary The outcome of this project will be to provide recommendations to Defra for the use of citizen science in gathering marine evidence in future. Current applications of citizen science will be reviewed, there will be engagement with existing initiatives for citizen science and two case-studies that engage citizens in science will be tested. The case-studies will fit into two categories: (1) To collate data already collected by existing sensors - by collecting depth-resolved temperature profiles from SCUBA divers to support hydrodynamic model validation and the development of regional climatology's in support of inshore fisheries management; (2) Engagement with stakeholders in scientific programmes - involving recreational sea anglers in shark and ray (elasmobranch) tagging programmes to help collect vital biological data that will contribute to the conservation of elasmobranchs and help delivery of the Defra shark action plan.
The project will review citizen science, identify tasks that are amenable for citizen science, and engage with current initiatives. The project will enable government to engage the public in citizen science applications and provide recommendations for a long-term programme of citizen science.
