Monkfish are among the most valuable stocks caught by the Irish fishing industry. Key uncertainties such as species identification in the catch, discard estimation, ageing and combined Total Allowable Catches represent significant challenges to assessing and managing these stocks. We propose that: 1) a range of assessment methods be compared for monkfish and 2) the influence of the uncertainties on the quality of the assessments and resultant management advice be examined using Management Strategy Evaluations (MSEs). Proposed assessment methods include traditional, advanced and developmental approaches appropriate to a PhD-level investigation. Operating models will be conditioned on best understanding of the species and fisheries; management models will be conditioned in collaboration with scientific experts and industry stakeholders. Deliverables will include high quality working reports and presentations to relevant national (e.g., NWWAC) and international (e.g., ICES) meetings, peer-reviewed manuscripts and fully documented reproducible code to conduct the analyses. Benefits for management include an in-depth exploration of key uncertainties concerning assessment and management of these valuable stocks with wider relevance to the development of mixed demersal species management plans. The Cullen Fellow will benefit from: advanced training in statistical modelling, assessment and simulation from experts at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology and the Marine Institute. Interaction with stakeholders will improve the quality and relevance of the products and develop the Fellow's understanding of the critically important feedback between scientific advice and management.
