An assessment of crustacean disease status in Ireland is both timely and essential in enabling us to better support the sustainability of marine biodiversity and valuable marine resources. A collaborative network made up of the Marine Institute, GMIT, Fish Vet Group and the University of Glasgow will support the execution of the proposed project by the Cullen fellow. The project will encompass parasite identification, disease status diagnosis, parasite pathogenicity, host resistance and parasite transmission pathways through the multi-disciplinary team of marine scientists, crustacean biologists, ecological parasitologists, animal health specialists, veterinarians and molecular biologists. The main aims of the project are to: • Establish the biology and ecology of a variety of microparasite species • Evaluate the impact of microparasite infections on crustacean health for a number of economically valuable crustacean species • Investigate the transmission of microparasite infections in crustaceans • Outline actions to be implemented by the fishing industry, in order to reduce the incidence of microparasite infection Through this approach important insights will be gained on the current risk of disease outbreaks for Ireland’s valuable crustacean species and their wider community.
