The gastropod Crepidula fornicata (Linnaeus, 1758) is a recent invader in the coastal lagoon of the Ria de Aveiro, with the first occurrence reported in 2014. This exotic species, native to the Atlantic coast of the United States of America, is relatively abundant on the northern coasts of Europe, where there are reports of various environmental and economic impacts. Portugal is the southern limit of its current distribution in Europe, but the presence and dynamics of the species are still poorly described. The CREPIDULA project will contribute to understanding the invasion process and the current state of Crepidula fornicata (Linnaeus, 1758) populations in the coastal lagoon of the Ria de Aveiro, located on the northwest Atlantic coast of Portugal. To this end, CREPIDULA will explore several lines of evidence, namely the characteristics of the species, the local history of introduction, the niche invaded, the life cycle and the local impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem services.
