In order to move towards the Scottish Government's vision of achieving clean, healthy, safe, productive and biologically diverse oceans and seas, the state of different ecosystems within Scottish waters needs to be assessed through the development of ecosystem-specific indicators. This project will: (1) Report on the current deepwater fish diversity, abundance and distribution, and assess the extent to which seamounts and banks form centres of biodiversity and closed populations; (2) Address the extent to which deepwater fish species have been impacted by commercial fisheries, and consider the sustainability of the fishery, including the potential effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas; (3) Assess contaminant concentrations in the Scottish deepwater environment. The overall objective was providing relevant biodiversity, ecosystem health and sustainability indicators to address whether the deep-waters of the North Atlantic are clean, healthy, safe, productive and biologically diverse. The project had two main themes; deepwater ecology and fisheries and monitoring of contaminants in deep sea fish.
