To build on work recently undertaken by International Council for the Exploration of the Seas WKLIFE (Workshop on the Development of Assessments based on LIFE history traits and Exploitation Characteristics) in which a framework for assessing 'data limited' finfish stocks was developed. There is now an opportunity to expand the approach and develop methods suitable for assessment of shellfish stocks. These methods can then be applied to a range of shellfish species to provide indications of likely stock status that will be useful in the context of both direct fishery management by Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities and the legislative requirements of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive to fish at Maximum Sustainable Yield by 2020. (1) To provide a framework of modelling techniques and tools that can be employed for a wide range of species and data limited situations; (2) To build on work already undertaken for the whelk (Buccinum undatum) in order to provide methods to assess these stocks; (3) To initiate a data collection programme to provide adequate data for the most appropriate model.
