Due to the criticism emerged in several Italian fishing fleets against the activity of fishing with demersal trawl twins, the present study, commissioned by the MIPAF, is aimed at a preliminary assessment of performance, yield and fishing on the bottom of the grooves generated both by bottom trawls that traditional networks twins. Traditional Twin trawls are composed of three tow ropes, the two external pulling the trawl hauls and internal two central bundles which are attached to the arms of the two trawls. For American trawls twins, however, the equipment consists of two tow ropes, two otter boards and a central weight or barbell that is essential in the operation of all the equipment. It is not easy to make definitive assessments considering the often opposing opinions from the stakeholders. However, the present investigation has allowed us to fill in some gaps about the use of twin trawls in the Adriatic. Currently there are few studies on the subject in the Mediterranean, it is therefore difficult to establish a rational evaluation of the effective potential of a twin trawl. Goals: (1) Assessment of performances and behaviour of a "twin trawl" fishing gear; (2) Comparison between traditional demersal otter trawl and otter twin trawl in terms of catchability and impact.
