The main purpose of this pilot project was to investigate whether there was a desire for, and need for, a form of catch limitation in spinners. Based on oral and written feedback from a relatively large group of active spinner fishermen, one can conclude that there is great interest in starting an R&D work on spinner rods. The study started with limiting catch in terms of quantity, but quite quickly other issues arose around spinners. Species selection with regard to cod and haddock was described by many as interesting, as well as issues around the square mesh bag were raised by very many with requests to adapt the specification to the current fleet structure and access to material types. Based on the great interest that the spinner fleet has shown for catch limitation / regulation, the project group recommends that a main project be started on spinners with the following sub-activities: Catch limitation with regard to quantity; Catch regulation with regard to species, primarily separating cod from haddock, and if possible from saithe; Catch regulation of fish size. Rework, adapt and nuance specifications for square mesh bag.
