There is a lack of long-term quantitative data for Mediterranean fisheries and as a consequence the quality of fish stock assessment is lower than in comparable North Atlantic fisheries. However, there exist sources with historical information on the development of Mediterranean fisheries during the 20th century. The EVOMED project carried out the compilation and analysis of historical, empirical and anecdotal evidences that help understand the evolution of fleets and fish catches. This information will provide ancillary data to improve the assessment of Mediterranean sea fisheries and exploited populations and ecosystems.
