After starting in 2005, the project Fluctuations and potentiality of platform fishing species in the region Andalusian Atlantic Ocean, which meant the continuation of the Fisheries Resources program in the Gulf of Cádiz, ended in November 2008 with a global investment of 1,461,939.21 euros. The investigation, carried out jointly by the Public Agricultural and Fisheries Development Company, IFAPA, the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), analyzed in the Spanish waters of the Gulf of Cádiz the relationship existing between oceanographic and biological variables to know the influence of currents, water quality, the pelagic productivity or the abundance of plankton on the spatio-temporal distribution of eggs and larvae of the species of fishing interest associated with the platform during their breeding season. Similarly, this program served to deepen the study of the fishery (catches, effort ...) and various biological aspects (size distribution, fertility cycles, nutritional status ...) of the five species of interest that are usually caught in the south-central zone of the Gulf of Cádiz: urta, bocinegro, red mullet, corvina and octopus. And ultimately instance, he tried to interpret the physical and biological data, as well as the historical series collected, for, in addition to expand knowledge about the platform, lay the foundation for creating technical benchmarks based on the characteristics of the ecosystem and thus help the management of the target species in the area.
