The project involved observation and characterisation of all decisions taken by skippers on-board commercial fishing vessels in response to different factors. The decision process followed by the skippers of the different fleets was then described by rule-based fuzzy cognitive maps. These maps were turned into multi-agent computational models, that included also the dynamics of the market and of the fish populations, using a user-friendly, free and open-source software developed within the project. The software was used to simulate how the fishing fleets and the fishery resources would behave, facing different fishery management strategies, and including complex feed-back cycles that are usually present in these kind of systems.
