Start year 2012 End year 2017 Funding (€) € 1,446,515 Website http://randd.defra.gov.uk/Default.aspx?Menu=Menu&Module=More&Location=None&ProjectID=18430 Summary The project will support the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy by improving our understanding of how to achieve Maximum sustainable yield in mixed fisheries; approaching multi-annual fisheries plans from the ecosystem perspective; and improving engagement with fisheries stakeholders. It will also help the UK to integrate fisheries management measures with objectives for the achievement of Good Environmental Status within Marine Strategy Framework Directive, including Descriptors 2 (non-indigenous species), 3 (commercial fish stocks), 4 (food webs) and 6 (seafloor integrity).
The project will: (1) Provide evidence on the ecosystem and fishery trade‐offs associated with alternative management options for mixed fisheries; (2) Investigate the impact of fishing and climate change on the productivity of fisheries; (3) Help to define candidate indicators of food webs and evaluate their utility in assessing impacts of fishing and climate change in regional seas; (4) Develop methodological approaches for the economic and social impact assessments of fisheries policies in a regional context; (5) Develop, test and validate ecosystem modelling tools.
