The seagrass Zostera marina (Linnaeus, 1753), once covered large areas in the Ria de Aveiro, but has been considered locally extinct since 2010. The recent discovery of a new patch of Z. marina, known locally as “Fita”, restarts the history of local episodes of extinction-recolonization for this emblematic species of the Rede Natura 2000 Ria de Aveiro site. The FITA project proposes five passive recovery actions to bring together interested local agents and protect the new population from imminent threats in the short term. FITA will gather knowledge about local population dynamics and species characteristics to improve its medium-term conservation strategy. Finally, it will promote participatory approaches to reduce conflicts between local actors and promote the long-term sustainable use of space and natural resources. The objective of FITA is to trigger actions for the protection and recovery of this vulnerable species, considered a priority habitat by the European Habitats Directive.
