In 2009 under Annex III of EU Regulation No. 43/2009 new technical measures regulations were introduced into part of Area VIa (West of Scotland) inside the 200m depth contour to protect cod, haddock and whiting stocks. In 2009 Bord Iascaigh Mhara carried out a series of trials to provide baseline data for the new regulations gears i.e. 120mm+120mm SMP and 110mm+110mm SMP. In addition trials were carried out to identify alternative gear options to the regulations that would provide similar selectivity patterns for cod, haddock and whiting. This project will continue on with this work and also look at the economic impact on these fisheries from the introduction of these measures.
