BIM have been requested to carry out a series of trials to look at gear options that could reduce cod catches in prawn fisheries in the Irish Sea and to assess whether these gears could maintain cod catches at the thresholds required under the EU regulations. Initial trials were completed in 2009 which identified the use of a rigid sorting grid and an inclined separator panel could meet the thresholds for cod catches under Article 13 2(a) and (b) of Reg. 1342/2008 for Nephrops fisheries in the Irish Sea (Area VIIa). It was further identified that a case should be built for these gears that would give exemption from effort restrictions under Article11 of the Regulation. This project aims to build the case for exemption through at sea observation and technical trials to make the sorting grids more appropriate for Irish fishing vessels.
