Summary Consumer and restaurant surveys show that many people want to buy ice cream, and then primarily as a fresh product. As of today, however, it is a challenge to obtain fresh raw material as icebergs live in the same areas as blue halibut, and both species occur in the catches. Blue halibut fishing in Norway is strictly regulated and there are strict by-catch rules for the species. It is therefore challenging to carry out direct fishing for icebergs. The opportunity to trade fresh icebergs is currently limited to the species being taken as a by-catch in a short and limited blue halibut fishery in the summer. The difficulties in gaining access to fresh raw materials and steady supply of raw materials are one of the bottlenecks in product and market development of icebergs.
Previous marketing work has shown that there is a good basis for increasing the turnover of icebergs if fish volume can be increased and a more continuous supply of raw materials is ensured throughout the year. The use of gear that allows selective fishing for icebergs can help ensure more predictable deliveries and access to fresh raw materials, which can result in higher prices.
Goals:
To lay the foundation for a profitable fishing for icebergs.
Sub-goal
1. To construct a pot that effectively fishes icefish without the intervention of blue halibut.
2. To try out the pot together with experienced pot fishermen to optimize and evaluate the potential of the pot.
3. To describe market opportunities for fresh ice cream in different segments.
