Mass labeling of mackerel has been carried out since 1969 by the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen using internal steel labels, where the fish are recaptured in commercial catches delivered to reception. The tag data are used to study migration, population dynamics, and for calculations of population size and mortality. The purpose of this project was to introduce more modern RFID (Radio Frequency ID Identification) technology that could streamline the work with marking and recapture and provide a better data basis for estimating population size and mortality. To develop and implement a complete RFID tagging system where the data flow from tagging to retrieving the tags will happen automatically. A database of reporting routines must be updated continuously and ensure that data is available at all times and with high quality.
