Certain hazardous organic compounds have been included in the action lists of the international marine protection conventions OSPAR and HELCOM as well as in Annex 10 of the EU - Water Framework Directive, due to their biological, chemical and physical properties (persistent, toxic, bioaccumulative) as well as to production volume, use and probability to reach the riverine and marine environment. Brominated flame retardants and short chain chlorinated paraffins are included in all lists. To get an overview about the distribution and accumulation behaviour in different marine compartments and to provide a decision basis for future monitoring and measures, analytical procedures have to be developed, adapted and validated and proven by real samples. This so-called monitoring accompanying research is performed as a cooperation of the German Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH), the German Federal Environmental Agency (UBA), the University of Basel (coordinator) and the German Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute (vTI) - Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries.
