RESEARCH OBJECTIVES: • To build national capacity in the use of telemetry to monitor movements of migratory fish species • To evaluate and optimise methods for the tagging of wild and reared post-smolts • To describe and map the migration routes taken by post-smolts of Atlantic Salmon and sea trout during their seaward migration from the Burrishoole catchment • To estimate survival of tagged post-smolts during their seaward migration from the Burrishoole catchment • To evaluate the influence of various endogenous (e.g. body size, behavioural traits) and exogenous (predation, obstacles, habitat features) factors on the survival of migrating post-smolts • To analyse annual and regional changes in salmon return rates since 1980 using the coded wire tagging database • To evaluate the influence of factors such as smolt release time, fishery closures and climatic conditions on temporal trends in survival
