This project aims to describe long-term trends in the biological parameters of herring in the Celtic Sea and herring off the northwest coast of Ireland. An in-depth analysis of biology and productivity over a long time scale, over different exploitation levels will be conducted. The publication of a series of papers in the peer-reviewed literature will underpin the rebuilding plans that are being developed for the two Irish herring stocks. The results of this work would also be used in ICES, and will be consistent with the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management. The project should form the basis of future decision making on the rational exploitation of Irish herring stocks.
