Summary It is widely acknowledged, that quality of data regarding a number of European commercial stocks has deteriorated in recent years due to several factors. Accurate and objective data is needed to allow for sound management decisions under the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). In addition much information is generated by the industry that is neither collected nor systematically used by scientists. A data collection scheme involving fishermen who are able to collect quality field data and scientists who can produce appropriate scientific advice would result in a better basis for fisheries management, while promoting mutual respect and understanding among the two groups. The main aim of the study is to expand the scope for improved quality of data to support policy decisions and further strengthen the current state of cooperation between fisheries scientists and the fishing industry by implementing joint data collection programmes. These can provide cost-effective and additional fishery data and the fishing industry can be actively involved in the scientific process leading to the provision of scientific advice.
The main aim of the study is to review, design and test the feasibility of new joint data collection programmes improving the data quality for fish stock assessments and fisheries management in a cost-effective way and involving the fishing industry more actively in the scientific process leading to the provision of scientific advice. A secondary objective - and an important one for the success of the proposal - is to build trust between the fishers and the scientists. This building of trust is being facilitated through working together on making the decisions about the detailed content of the project and through work on the implementation.
