The Norwegian fishing industry faces major challenges with regard to the recruitment of managers when the generation born in the 1940s retires. Handling change processes is becoming increasingly important in the industry and managers depend on the legitimacy of their employees in order to achieve the desired development of the company. This may vary with managers' generational affiliation, social background and gender. The study tests this among a sample of 145 fishing industry companies. In addition, life history interviews are conducted with a narrower selection to be able to develop knowledge about how leaders themselves see their life course, their choices and their leadership role and how they see themselves in relation to other generations. The results of the project are intended to form a development tool for understanding the importance of generations, for example in the composition of management teams, in mentoring and board programs. The project will have ongoing contact with the Fisheries Industry's competence center, as well as with individual companies in the Tromsø module's VS2010 portfolio.
