Marine biodiversity - patterns and processes (Marbipp) is a problem oriented research program aimed to provide scientific results transformed into guidelines for management of coastal marine biodiversity. An additional goal is to provide a landmark study for biodiversity research in marine environments that could be adopted for other ecosystems and areas than the ones included in Marbipp. The main research tasks addressed in Marbipp are how marine biodiversity is distributed and what type of indicators are useful to assess biodiversity at genetic and species levels. Furthermore, what regulates biodiversity in natural ecosystems and what are the effects of human disturbances such as fragmentation, nutrient pollution and resource exploitation. Estimates of ecosystem goods and services will be used to approach the question of how biodiversity relates to ecosystem function, and how ecosystem functions can be valued. In addition, basic mechanisms relating ecosystem function with aspects of biodiversity will be investigated. To increase the scientific knowledge of marine biodiversity of 5 common biotopes along the Swedish coast, and to use this to develop an web-based information tool for managers and the public.
