Since the 2012/13 season, a large part of purse seine fishing for Norwegian spring-spawning (NVG) herring has taken place in coastal waters in Troms, and partly in narrow fjords. During this period, there have been frequent interactions between ringed seine and humpback whales and killer whales that follow the herring into the fjords to graze on it. This has already led to injury and death for the whales and lost catch and damage to equipment for the fishermen. To prevent such interactions, several types of acoustic alarms (also known as ""whale scarers"") have been developed to keep marine mammals away from fish farms and breeding facilities. The project will map the effect of such installations in trials carried out in other countries. Main objective: To survey and test equipment and methods that can help reduce interactions between fisheries and whales, particularly related to herring fishing along and off the coast of Norway. Sub-goals: • To compile and evaluate previous knowledge. • To carry out detailed testing of equipment and methods on whales. • To carry out testing and adaptation in active fishing.
