The goal of this project is to collate existing information and collect new one for the characterization of MPAs and their associated fishing activities in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. Overall, this study will lead to an improvement of the evaluation and integration of fisheries in MPA management. The specific aims of the contract are to characterize (i) the existing MPAs; (ii) the fishing activities present within PPAs and their surrounding areas; and to understand (iii) the response of the fishing activities to MPA implementation. The project will combine a 1) large-scale assessment collecting information on a large number of MPAs throughout the Mediterranean and Black Seas and 2) a case-study approach focusing on a set of selected case studies in which in-depth information will be gathered and analyzed to assess spatial redistribution of fishing activities in response to MPA implementation and perceptions of relevant stakeholders related to fisheries within the selected MPAs and their surrounding areas.
