This project will develop knowledge and methods to enable the estimation of the length of medium sized pelagic fish prior to them being caught. The project will use newly available broadband echosounders to detect the size of various parts of individual fish and from this estimate their length. The project will first work with fish-like targets, then move to fish in cages, and then to fish in the open ocean. We will study Altantic herring and Atlantic mackerel, two species that are the subject of important commercial fisheries in Norway and the EU. The eventual aim of the project is to provide methods and knowledge that can improve the size selectivity of commercial fishing operations and hence reduce fish discarding and unwanted by-catch.
