The Mediterranean fishing sector is characterized by the large number of small vessels engaging in coastal fisheries. These vessels use various gears, mainly on a seasonal basis, and target a large variety of species. Fish are landed mostly in small ports without the necessary infrastructure for official recording and are usually distributed straight to the market.Estimating fishing effort and production from these vessels is difficult and risky. The aim of this research project is to investigate the various coastal fishery métiers in the area of Lesbos and Limnos islands, and to estimate the métier-specific fishing effort and production. The results of this project will be useful in designing the sampling scheme for coastal fisheries in Greece.
