The aim of this topic was to conduct further tests on the selective properties of codends with meshes turned through 90° versus Bacoma-type cod codends. The studies were conducted using both research and commercial ships. Selective properties are closely connected with the mechanical properties of codend netting. Goal: Selective and protective properties of particular codends depend on mechanical properties of netting meshes. In turn, mechanical properties of meshes twine depend on chemical type of a material used and shape of a mesh bar cross-section. Mechanical properties of particular chemical material are characterized by modulus of elasticity (E - Young's modulus) and shape of a mesh bar cross-section is characterized by moment of inertia of the mesh cross-section (J). Product of these two parameters gives parameter which is telling about bending possibilities of mesh bars and in consequence about mesh opening. Different mesh opening shape a different selective and protective properties of a codends. So, the main aim of the project was investigation of mechanical properties of different netting twines and theirs influence onto codend's selective and protective properties.
