The aim of the project is the further assessment of the distribution and density of Antarctic minke whales and other large whale species inside and outside the pack ice of the Southern Ocean, following on from project 2809HS020. For this purpose, a comparison of different survey methods and the evaluation of further current data to support the scientific committee of the IWC in the 'In-Depth Assessment' of minke whales in the Antarctic is considered necessary. The results of the project will be used to calculate future catch quotas should commercial whaling be resumed. Some of the results will be presented at the 63rd Annual Meeting of the IWC in Tromsoe. The applicant will be in close contact with the VTI during the entire duration of the project, so that the current status of the project can be reported at any time. The work plan includes the consolidation and comparison of the observed values from the flight counts and the Antarctic trip (ANTXXVIII/2 Dec. - Jan. 2011/12). Furthermore, the results obtained will be processed using various modelling methods and linked to relevant environmental parameters. This will enable the abundance of Antarctic minke whales to be reliably estimated in order to calculate catch quotas if necessary.
