The proliferation in the frequency of use and applications of artificial nanoparticles (NPs) will most likely lead to a substantial increase in their levels in the environment in the coming years. All NPs, once in the terrestrial or aquatic biosphere, will interact with the biota and potentially induce adverse effects on biological systems, including humans. Gold NPs (PNPs) are among the most widely used, and are increasingly being used in various products (e.g., hair tonics, cosmetics, toothbrushes, etc.) and biomedical applications (e.g., imaging and therapeutics), due to their physical properties that vary with size. One of the basic requirements for the use of GNPs is their non-toxic nature and biocompatibility in both in vivo and in vitro environments. However, recent investigations (in vitro and in vivo) have highlighted its toxicity, raising important questions about its possible impact on human health and the environment. Thus, the effect of these particles on cellular cytotoxicity has recently become a subject of high interest. There has been an increase in the number of publications reporting toxicity of GNPs, in contrast to other studies reporting their harmlessness. Differences in the batches of GNPSS used in toxicology tests, in the experimental conditions and the numerous cell lines/animal models used make comparison of results very difficult. Despite growing concern about the potential negative impact of NPS on the environment, little is known about their effects on marine species and their interactions with other environmental contaminants. The NanoAu project aims to increase knowledge about the effects of GNPSS on marine organisms, using sea bream (Sparus aurata) as a model organism.
