Summary The Norwegian coastal line fishery is considered an environmentally friendly fishery because it affects the bottom habitats to a small extent, produces relatively little bycatch of non-commercial species and has a low energy consumption. In addition, the line fleet delivers fish of top quality, which provides the basis for increased value creation. Line is also an important tool because it can be used on most types of fishing grounds (bottom types), and several species are caught almost exclusively with line (tusker, ling, catfish, halibut, toothfish).
The fishing principle for line is based on the grazing behavior of the fish, and the bait is therefore a key factor in fishing with this type of gear. Perhaps the biggest challenge for line fishing lies in the consumption of high-priced bait and the use of a resource that could have been used for consumption. While there have been and are ongoing activities to solve the bait challenges, little has been done in recent decades to further develop the hook and supply itself.
Main goal:
To develop a new concept for hooks and supply new material types and improve properties.
Sub-goals:
• To develop a hook that does not corrode and is more efficient and has a longer life than the current hook.
• Developing a supply that does not emit microplastics, can be adapted to different operating modes and has a longer life than the current supply.
