The main objective of the project is to ensure the performance of the National Stranding Network in the North region, the systematic collection of information that contributes to the determination of the patterns of occurrence and distribution of the main species of marine mammals and reptiles in the region, the assessment of their main causes of mortality, the collection of biological samples that allow to characterize the biology and ecology of the most common species, contributing to the ECOMARE marine animal tissue bank and contributing to the coordination of effective responses in situations of high mortality and the support of live strandings. The Northern Portugal Stranding Network project includes a highly trained team and has the collaboration of the Portuguese Wildlife Society (SPVS). The project works between Caminha and Peniche and the permanent response teams travel to the site of the stranding. The live animals are rescued for CRAMECOMARE.
