Summary It is known that large areas of former kelp forest areas have been grazed by sea urchins in the 1970s, and that the sea urchins have since maintained a stable and high population in large parts of the grazed areas. The loss of the kelp forest has had major ecological and economic consequences for almost 40 years.
By ensuring that there is a sufficiently high harvest pressure on the sea urchins over larger areas, one will hopefully have a permanent re-establishment of kelp forest at the same time as utilizing the sea urchins commercially as a food resource. Along the entire grazed coastal strip, there is still a fringe of intact kelp forest in the outermost most wave-exposed areas. In the border zone between kelp forests and grazed areas, it is possible to find the best sea urchins in terms of size and gonad content.
Goal: to outline different perspectives related to a commercial exploitation of Norwegian sea urchin populations. The perspective study will seek to shed light on the possible consequences / effects of harvesting sea urchins on kelp forest and kelp forest ecology, as well as on nutrients based on resources associated with kelp forest. In addition, the kelp forest ecosystem will be placed in a climate context.
The perspective study will include:
a) Preparation of a resource base map.
b) Preparation of a ""CO2 account"" for regrowth of kelp forest.
c) Briefly describe the importance of regrowth of kelp forest for species diversity in the coastal zone.
d) Briefly describe the significance of regrowth of kelp forest for coastal marine resources.
