Marine litter is a global problem. Plastic litter in the sea is problematic due to its persistence. In Europe about 70-80% of total marine litter are plastics. Especially smaller particles, microplastics, which are particles smaller than 5 mm, are regarded as ecologically problematic. Microplastics can be taken up by marine organisms, accumulate in the food chain and cause harm to the organism as well as being the source for contaminants. PlasM investigates the amount of plastic litter in marine fish in the North Sea as well as in the Baltic Sea and adjacent waters. Further on, the potential negative impact of plastic to fish health will be investigated. The aim is a better evaluation of the risk posed by plastics to marine fish. The project comprises a chemical analytical task on extraction, identification and quantification of microplastics in fish, investigation of microplastics in relevant fish species from North Sea and Baltic Sea respectively, as well as exposure studies. With the latter, possible effects of microplastics to fish will be quantified aiming at the evaluation of the amount of plastic found in the wild. These investigations are related to environmental assessment as demanded by the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
