Summary PRESPO is clearly trans-national as in the areas included in the project (Portugal, Spain and France) in particular, and in the Atlantic Area in general, the artisanal fishery has great social and economical importance, namely in the areas that highly dependent on this activity, which is a tradition and a factor of regional identity that constitutes part of the culture of the different regions, and therefore, should be maintained and preserved. With the project PRESPO it is expected to improve the current fisheries management policy of common fishing resources in the Atlantic Area that are exploited by the artisanal fleet, through the development of alternative tools towards to an integrate management of coastal fisheries. PRESPO will contribute to the organisation of costal fisheries and for the promotion of their sustainability, with positive repercussions at social-economic level, in particular through the maintenance of jobs in the fisheries sector, as well as in its associated industries. For these reasons, PRESPO counts with the support from the fisheries sector, in particular from the Conseil Consultatif Régional Sud.
The PRESPO project aims to collect a set of scientific information that will improve the artisanal fisheries management, increasing their sustainability in biological, environmental, social and economic terms. This resulted in the following specific objectives: (1) Develop tools and instruments to gather information on the activity of the artisanal fleet; (2) Propose a data collection program for artisanal fisheries, particularly for small-scale fisheries; (3) Develop systems to allow for integrated data analysis, in order to facilitate decision-making; (4) Develop integrated and dynamic bio-socio-economic models in order to improve fisheries management in the Atlantic Area; (5) Improve technical efficiency of vessels, consequently reducing fishing effort; (6) Reduce the fishing effort directed towards some commercial species through the promotion of alternative and diversified activities to fishing; (7) Increase vessels profitability by creating more added value to the fishing products; (8) Develop and modify fishing gears aiming to reduce environmental impact on the ecosystem, by reducing mortality and discards associated with this activity; (9) Suggest a surveillance system capable of informing the fishing industry about the trends and developments regarding unwanted negative biologic and economic situations; (10) Consolidate the international scientific network of collection of fisheries biological, social and economical data; (11) Promote international cooperation between the main research centres of the project partners; (12) Contribute to achieve the objectives of new Common Fisheries Policy.
