Shellfisheries are managed by comparatively few regulations and information on potential impacts of potting on the seabed substrate and biological community diversity is scarce. But this is required to inform future management. This collaborative project between Newcastle University and Natural England, supported by Northumberland Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (NIFCA) seeks to understand the effects of pot fishing intensity on biotopes within the Berwick and North Northumberland Coast European Marine Site. Building on previous work carried out at Newcastle University (Skerritt, Turner), in collaboration with NIFCA, this work is investigating the impact of potting on substrates by analysing biotope information from existing surveys conducted for Natural England in 2002/3 and 2011. The resultant biotope information will be analysed in conjunction with potting intensity data (e.g. activity and landings).
