Start year 2008 End year 2013 Funding (€) € 1,554,802 Website http://sciencesearch.defra.gov.uk/Default.aspx?Menu=Menu&Module=More&Location=None&Completed=0&ProjectID=15192 Summary The project objective is to develop technologies which minimise discarding (and therefore environmental impact) to the practicable minimum across all English and Welsh fishing fleets. Techniques and tools developed under a previous research project, MF0738, will be used. Focused discard-mitigating solutions will be developed jointly with industry and other agencies, for example gear modifications, improved onboard catch handling, fishing pattern alterations or new technologies, area/time/effort manipulations. The project will provide both the industry and Defra with advice and tools to allow quantification of the patterns and causes of discards, including an evaluation of the potential efficacy of newly developed discard mitigation solutions. It is hoped that the work could facilitate and support an industry shift towards reduced discarding and more environmentally-responsible fishing.
